Choosing the perfect gift for your girlfriend is not as difficult as it may seem. While your girlfriend will likely appreciate the thought and time you spent choosing the gift almost as much as she appreciates the gift itself, there is nothing stopping you from finding her the absolute perfect gift, making her happier than ever!
So how do you find the “perfect” gift? Ask yourself two basic questions about your girlfriend to get started:
By understanding what your girlfriend spends most of her time doing, you can focus on what items she uses while doing those activities. After figuring out what she spends most of her time doing, ask yourself these questions to truly understand what she may want or need:
If your answer to number one was “yes,” your gift shopping just got a whole lot easier. Pay attention when she says “That _ is so cute/pretty/adorable/….,” “I like _,” or even “I wish I had _.” These are dead giveaways as to what she would love to receive as a gift. Take note of what item she fills in the blank with, and keep count of how many times she mentions that item. If she mentions a particular item more than once or twice, chances are she is truly interested in that item, making it a perfect gift for her! Note however, that just because she mentions an item once or twice, does not mean that she would consider it a good gift. She could be joking around, or even worse, it could be a temporary desire (i.e. just something she wants now because it would prove useful in the current situation).
While it is always nice to be in the situation where your girlfriend directly states what she likes or wants, this is not always the case. Brainstorm about what items she uses while doing her favorite activities or hobbies. By thinking about what items she uses the most, we can find her the perfect gift just as easily as if she directly stated what she wants. After discovering the top item or two that she uses the most (items that you have not already replaced with gifts), think about if a better version of the item she is currently using would benefit her.
What if she already has the best versions? You’ve got to brainstorm! Think about and find a new gift that could add value to her activity, or more simply, make her happy! While more physical possessions (e.g. gifts) do not always make people – like your girlfriend – happier, higher quality replacements for items that they already have typically DO make people happier! An example, using the above questions to help find the perfect gift:
“She loves yoga and spends anywhere from half an hour to two hours a day doing it.” Moving forward with this answer, ask yourself the next two questions.
“Now that I think about it, yes. She uses a yoga mat. She also plays a peaceful soundtrack to help her focus while doing yoga.” Whether you realize it or not, you have just discovered one or more great gift ideas! Consider purchasing your girlfriend a better version (whether it is a more comfortable material, larger size, a nicer color, etc.) of her yoga mat, or buy her a new peaceful soundtrack CD that she can play when she does her yoga. Going off of these ideas, you can brainstorm even more unique ideas. Ask yourself “Could my girlfriend benefit from a better version of what she already has, a music player (e.g. an iPod, iPhone, a radio, etc)?”
By using the above guide, you are sure to find a gift your girlfriend will love. Remember to be creative in your thoughts and gift ideas. The more unique and tailored (the gift fits your girlfriend perfectly), the more special your girlfriend will feel. Your girlfriend will love that you spent time thinking about what to give her and will take your attention to detail and care for her desires as a very high complement and respect for interests.
